Another good Publix treat

I've written before how yummy Publix fudge bars are. I've discovered another treat from Publix: their peppermint candy. It's much better than "the real thing" by Brach's! You should try some.

Name brands have  definitely come a long way!

Frangelico

The other day, out of the blue, I got a hankering for some Frangelico. I think the chill in the air made me think about it! The next day, I made a special trip to the liquor store and grabbed a bottle (You can't miss it: it has the same shape as a bottle of Aunt Jemimah syrup.) Yummy! I like just a little Frangelico at a time, about "deux doigts" worth as they'd say in France. And a little goes a long way for this delectable liquid desert!

Bear Creek Minestrone Soup

I'm no cook, but I do like to eat healthy. Soups are good, especially if they are broth based and have lots of vegetables. For a soup that's good, cheap, easy and fast, try Bear Creek Minestrone Soup mix. It's in the soup section and is dried, so you "whisk" it in 8 cups of boiling water and cook for 15 minutes. While it's cooking, I brown a pound of ground beef and a chopped onion to add to the soup. If you want to get fancy, add a small can of tomato sauce. There's no end to what other veggies or spices you could add. Charles and I have it with a roll and we sprinkle (actually, I dump) parmesan cheese on top. Highly recommended!

No Rinse Shampoo

Fed up with the way my mother's hair has been looking lately at the nursing home, I decided to take matters into my own hands. On a quest for a "shampoo" of sorts that didn't require water, I ventured to CVS today, and lo and behold on the bottom shelf, there it was: No Rinse Shampoo! A little pricey at about 8 bucks a bottle, it still seemed a bargain. No Rinse was so easy to use. The smell was neutral, and Mama's hair turned out beautifully! I'm going to do her hair more often! We listened to Episcopal hymns while I was styling her and had a good ol' time. The best 8 dollars I've spent in a while!

I'm Green!

About a month ago, at the encouragement of my cosmetologist, I started taking Kyo-Green daily - it's powdered  greens that comes in a bottle and is chock full of healthy stuff from both the land and sea. (Sounds yummy, doesn't it?) Elisabeth has talked about it for a long time and, in fact, about 4 years ago I actually bought a bottle, opened it up and thought it smelled too much like hay to even try it. That bottle ended up in the trash, never tasted! Not sure what spurred me on a month ago, except the enthusiasm of Elisabeth! Upon her advice, I mixed it with cold apple juice. Believe it or not, it's tastes refreshing! (Admittedly, I drink it very fast.)

Kyo-Green claims to increase energy and to provide a full serving of greens in just a couple of spoonfuls. Elisabeth calls it "insurance" since most people (me included) don't eat enough green food. So far, I'm convinced! But, ask me in a couple of months when I'm huffing and puffing through the Atlanta half-marathon!

Publix Fudge Bars

Have you ever tried a Publix Fudge Bar? They are the perfect summer sweet, much better than the Kroger brand and even the Mayfield version. Why? They're so creamy and they have just enough fat to give the bar some substance but not so much to weigh you down. At about $2.50 for a box of 12, you should try some the next time you're grocery shopping!

Kudos to Kroger

I ran into Kroger after work just to get a few items. $74 later, I was wheeling the buggy out to my car and thinking... "Hmm, that's a lot of money considering that I didn't get any meat." That's when it hit me that I had forgotten to hand the cashier my Kroger Plus Card. On a whim, I wheeled back in to the Customer Service desk and asked the manager if there's anyway he could re-scan my groceries and give me the Kroger discount. All he ended up having to do was scan the receipt and do a little paper work, and the next thing I knew, he was pulling my $11.60 worth of savings out of his cash register. Wow! That was easy, to quote another retailer! I was impressed that Kroger's point of sale system is sophisticated enough to process such a transaction. 3 points for Kroger!

Zappos.com

The three pair of shoes that I ordered from Zappos.com last night were on my doorstep this afternoon when I came home from work. That means that they were delivered in way less that 24 hours. Amazing! And, there was no extra charge for shipping, and if the shoes had not fit, I could have shipped them back for free. How the heck do they do it? The next time I need shoes, I'm going to give Zappos.com another try!

I guess the trick is knowing the size you need in a particular brand. For example, I know that I wear 6.5 M in such and such a brand, so there was no guess work for me. However, the website encourages you to order several pair in various styles and sizes, and keep what fits and return what doesn't. I really do wonder how they make a profit with such customer-friendly customer service! Way to go Zappos!

All's right with the world

After shopping around Atlanta (and Chattanooga) with no luck, and desperate for new shoes, I ended up going to Zappos.com and ordered 3 pair of sandals by my favorite Sesto Meucci. They are almost identical to three pair that I already have, which I just love! Now I have back-up pairs, so I can wear my current ones without fear of ruining them.

Zappos claims overnight shipping! Only problem will be delivery here at the condo: sometimes UPS will not leave big packages and I end up having going to the distribution center to pick up. Oh well: by this time next week, one way or another, I'll be rich in shoes! And, all will be right with the world!
